Reid Rocks Fund

Who: I’m Br. Chris Sweeney, a Brother of the Sacred Heart for 30 years and a missionary in Mozambique for the last 11 years. I requested a sabbatical year in order to address some physical issues and to do a reset spiritually and emotionally. Recently, doctors installed a new knee and in a few months I’ll travel to San Antonio to participate in a sabbatical program at the Oblate School of Theology. The final 5 months of my sabbatical will be to get on my bike and ride for a bit.

Who Else: Though I am prepared to go it alone, the “Ride for Reid” is open to anyone who would like to come. You can ride with me for one day, one week, a month or for the entire 5 months.

What: The “Ride for Reid” has been a dream for some time and now it’s a reality. Reid Sweeney is my youngest nephew, son of my brother Craig Sweeney and Mignon Sweeney. Reid is now 7 years old and has been gifted with the amazing ability to make everyone around him smile. I can’t think of a more precious gift. Reid was born with Down Syndrome and is indeed one of God’s special children. The “Ride for Reid” was established to support the Reid Rocks Fund so that children with special needs can continue to bring smiles to as many people as possible.

The Reid Rocks Fund: It is a charitable fund at the Northshore Community Foundation to support the special needs community. The community has graciously supported Reid in the past for the Miracle League. Donations to the Reid Rocks Fund are tax deductible. The Fund plans to contribute its proceeds to organizations that support individuals with special needs. A great example is the Bitty and Beau franchise, a coffee shop with special needs employees.  See more about Bitty and Beau here.

When: The “Ride for Reid” will begin March 1st, 2023 and will end sometime in late July.

Where: The route begins in New Orleans, we bike along the Gulf Coast beaches and continue across Florida to the Atlantic coast. Once we hit water we turn left and follow the East Coast Greenway to Washington, DC. After waving to the Washington Monument we again turn left onto the Great American Rail Trail and across the country. Eventually, we end up on the west coast in Seattle and again make a left turn on the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco. Total distance of the tour is close to 6000 miles.
